Six-time Tour De France stage winner Tom Boonen will race in the American SpeedFest-headlining NASCAR Whelen Euro Series (NWES) this year.
The Belgian former cyclist is pursuing his passion for motor racing following a pro cycling career which included a World Championship success, victories in the gruelling Paris-Roubaix and Tour of Flanders races, and a first place finish in the Tour de France Green Jersey competition.
Boonen raced a handful of times in other categories last year, but made the decision to commit to NASCAR following a visit to the NWES finale at Zolder and a subsequent test.
Boonen will race for the Braxx Racing team in the Elite 2 NWES class for gentleman drivers, sharing his car with Elite 1 pro and countryman Marc Goossens. As a former winner of the Formula Ford Festival, Goossens will be perfectly placed to offer Boonen a few tips on how to tackle the Indy circuit.
The Elite 1 and Elite 2 NWES classes will headline American SpeedFest VI at Brands Hatch on 9-10 June, with races on both days of the event.
Boonen said: ““I drove in different races last year and I was looking for a competition to combine with my commitments at the national level when at the end of the season I had the chance to test the Euro NASCAR car and I fell in love with it straight away because it provides a fantastic experience. It’s real racing and the car is just amazing. Right after the test I was already talking to Jerry to plan the next step.
“I expect to be competitive in Hockenheim and hopefully try to score some podium finishes towards the end of the season. I’m really looking forward to the first race in Valencia. Here in Belgium the Finals were huge last year and Brands Hatch is a must see too, as are the other events in the calendar. The Series is also pretty young and now it’s the right time to jump in it!”
