The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series (NWES), which will headline American SpeedFest in June, kicks off in Valencia, Spain, this weekend with its best ever driver line-up.
A total of 31 cars have been confirmed for the season, with a mixture of professional and amateur drivers sharing their machines across two classes. This year’s stellar line-up includes US NASCAR legend Bobby Labonte, as well as reigning champion Alon Day, and two-time champion Anthony Kumpen.
Others to look out for include Marc Goossens, who is something of a Brands Hatch Indy circuit expert, with a Formula Ford Festival win to his name, and his gentleman driver partner Tom Boonen – a former winner of the Tour De France Green Jersey during his previous career as a road cyclist.
Fans will have a home grown driver to cheer for this year too, as Alex Sedgwick joins the championship in a MRT Nocentini Ford Mustang.
The cars in the NWES are race prepared stock cars based on production designs by Toyota, Chevrolet, and Ford. They take clear design cues from the NASCAR machines you see on American ovals – this is authentic US-style stock car racing at its very best.
There will be four NWES races at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo this year, mirroring the format you will see at SpeedFest on 9-10 June – two races for each the professional (Elite 1) and gentlemen (Elite 2) drivers.
