NASCAR legend Bobby Labonte will return to American SpeedFest for a second straight year this June, after committing to a full season in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series.
The 21-time NASCAR Cup race-winner and former champion, who made his UK racing debut at SpeedFest V last year and recorded an impressive top ten finish, will race at SpeedFest VI on 9-10 June in a Toyota stock car for RDV Competition with support from YACCO.
Labonte’s appearance last year made him the first American NASCAR champion to drive in the NWES, and he will become the first to mount a season long title challenge this year.
Labonte said: “Joining the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series is a great opportunity. At the Brands Hatch race last year, I was definitely impressed by the competitiveness of the series. The testing we did with Frederic Gabillon last fall and putting this together with Franck Violas and the RDV team gives me a great advantage. Having the opportunity to represent YACCO as a sponsor on a global level just adds to the excitement, and I look forward to all the growth and new opportunities this could bring.”
NWES President/CEO Jerome Galpin said: “It is a huge milestone for the Whelen Euro Series to welcome an American champion of Bobby’s caliber to contend for the title. This is another sign of the international appeal the series has delivered. We are proud to have a strong international lineup of 30 drivers and teams.”
NASCAR Senior Vice President and Chief International Officer Jim Cassidy said: “Bobby Labonte is one of the greatest champions in NASCAR history, and his participation in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series is a huge win for fans and competitors alike,” "Labonte's full-time involvement gives American fans an even stronger connection to the series, while offering our European fans a close look at one of NASCAR’s greats.”
Labonte will contest two of the four NWES races at Brands Hatch on 9-10 June. The NWES brings the full colour and excitement of American racing to Europe’s circuits.
